CT Abdomen/Pelvis
Indications
- Abdominal pain
- Suspected appendicitis or diverticulitis
- Oncology staging or follow-up
- Evaluation of infection, abscess, or fluid collections
Patient Preparation
- NPO 2–4 hours prior to exam if possible.
- Verify renal function and contrast allergy status per site policy.
- Confirm pregnancy status when applicable.
IV Contrast
- Contrast type: nonionic iodinated contrast per site formulary.
- Typical dose: weight-based per institutional guideline.
- Injection rate: standard abdominal rate per injector protocol.
- Phase: portal venous phase timing per scanner timing preset.
Oral Contrast
Use oral contrast per site preference and indication. Follow local timing and volume instructions.
Scanner and Technique
- Coverage: dome of diaphragm through symphysis pubis.
- Slice thickness: standard diagnostic thickness with thin reconstructions for reformats.
- Reformats: axial, coronal, and sagittal planes as per routine body CT protocol.
Notes
- For renal stone or trauma indications, use dedicated stone or trauma protocol as appropriate.
- Document any protocol deviations in the exam notes.
